Birthdays come and go… but family is forever. ? Oh.. cliche phrases, so good-bad sometimes. But, what if family birthdays collide into a screaming vortex of awesomeness??? Translation: My mom and I have birthdays that are back to back. Every year my mom says I was the best early birthday present she could have asked for.. aww, so sweet, right!? I know I love it.
Last year we decided to celebrate together by going up to Mendocino, Ca for a few days. We stayed in this great old inn right on the coast. For a serious part of the day, often in a book-end fashion, fog padded its way along the shore and cozied itself into the ocean-bordering lands, transforming the normally hot summer month of August in California into a saturated, undulating, almost ethereal other-world: a complete vacation from what reality, a mere 4 hour drive south, was at home. ..And just what we wanted – escape. We relished in biking and hiking together through the Redwood forests that as ever in Northern California insist upon squeezing their way right to the western edge of the continent. The rest of the time we walked along the shore and in the small town of Mendocino itself.. that is, when we weren’t too busy having tea and reading by the inn’s fireplace in old ‘you’ll-never-want-to-move-again’ leather armchairs, or staring at the foggy view and inhaling the salt air from the wooden planked balcony above. It was one of the best trips I have ever taken.
A year later, and I am halfway across the world leading myself on the adventure of living in London.. which puts me across the world from my mom on our birthdays. Not wanting to ignore the fun of the back-to-back birthdays, this was my salute to the Jordan/Gordon Leos:
